Loads of sci-fi is pretty grim stuff. There are actually interplanetary wars. There are fascist societies with evil overlords. There's Dying and deception and so forth. However it’s not all doom and gloom. The proof would be the beloved (and often tailored) series of books underneath the blanket identify The Hitchhiker’s Guide into the Galaxy,
